Step One: Get to know your tools.

Step One: Get to know your tools.

Knowing how to install ceramic tile flooring starts with gathering the right kinds of tools and equipment for the project. You can buy most of the tools you’ll need for working on your floor tiling at your local hardware store or home center. For equipment that might be too expensive to purchase like a tile cutter, or hand held micro cutter, try your local home center or tool rental yard. They may have the tools you’ll need at affordable rental prices, or even at discount. And if you’re a newbie at tiling work, they may even help you with information. Here are most of the basic tools you will need for your tiling job:

a) These would include safety clothing and gear like a pair of safety glasses, heavy leather gloves, and long-sleeved work clothes. These are useful especially if your tiling work involves taking out the existing ceramic tiles. Broken shards and other debris from tearing out the ceramic tiles can cause nasty cuts.

b) Carpentry tools like a tape measure, a carpenter’s square and a bubble level.

c) Tile spacers, a putty knife, a trowel (preferably, the notched kind), and a rubber grout float will also be needed. You will need a tile cutter as well, which you can just rent.

d) For bonding tiles to the subfloor surface, mortar material like a thin set mortar, or tile adhesive, tiling grout and sealant will also be needed.

Step Two: Prepare your subfloor before installing your tiles.

This is where the tiling procedure begins. It would be a great experience for you to learn how to install ceramic tile by learning about the type of floors you will be putting your tiles on. Always check for cracks and debris when If you’re working on a concrete subfloor. Make it is smooth and clean. Repair as many of the cracks as you can. If you see cracks that are too large to repair, replace the floor section where they are found with new concrete. For plywood subfloors, be sure that the wood is at least 1 and 1/8 inches thick and is supported by an equally strong underlayment. Otherwise, your ceramic tiles will dislodge easily, or worse, break and need replacing.

For those with existing tile floors, you will have to add another step in the process and that is to remove the existing tiles. For starters, all you need to do is use a large flat-bladed chisel and a mallet, and just hammer away. Then, you’ll need to clean out the debris. If you to smoothen your subfloor — you may want to rent a sander to do the job. Be sure to keep yourself protected. Use heavy-duty leather work gloves, safety glasses, and long-sleeved work clothes.

Step Three: Make the measurements on your floor. To know where to start and how to install ceramic tile on your subfloor, begin by measuring the length and width of your floor. This will help you estimate the number of ceramic floor tiles you will need to purchase. Then, find the center point of your floor area. You Measure across floor area and mark the center. Do this in opposite direction and mark the center, as well. The intersection of the two lines is the center of the floor area where you can start your tiling work. To help with your tiling, run chalk lines over the intersection lines. These chalk lines will help you with how to install ceramic tile and help you keep your tiling straight and organized.

Step Four: Start work on your ceramic tile installation

Your first tile should be placed at the intersection of the two lines you made. Then, bond it to your subfloor by using a thin set mortar, or a tile adhesive of your choice. Using a notched trowel for applying the mortar is best on how to install ceramic tile. But you may actually use the more common trowel variety is you don’t have one. To secure the ceramic tile in its place, press down while twisting it back and forth till the tile no longer is set. If some of the mortar or adhesive oozes out, use your trowel (or a damp sponge) to scrape off the excess. Do this process over with the next tile, and so on and so forth, until you’ve finished your ceramic floor tiling.

Step Five: Finish your tiling job by putting in the tiling grout and sealant

Once the ceramic floor tiles have settled in its places, it’s time to put the tiling grout in. Tiling grout is a material that you should know more about when you want to know how to install ceramic tile flooring. Grout is tiling material made cement, sand and water, and a little color. It is used to fill in gaps and seal in the spaces between tiles. Tiling grout comes in a wide variety of color tints that may be matched to your tile color. Use a rubber grout float and work the tiling grout into the gaps between the tiles. Use your grout float at an angle so that you can fill in the joint gap with as much tiling grout as possible.

Once you’re done with applying grout along the tile gaps, wipe off the excess grout with a damp sponge. Rinse the sponge frequently to get as much of the excess grout off, and keep each tile clean. You have the option of applying a sealant to the grout lines after they dry.

Make sure you allow some time for the grout to dry before you apply the sealant. These setting periods last overnight, at the very least, to twenty-four hours, at the most. Your sealant has dried, you are done! Congratulations! Now, you know how to install ceramic tile flooring.

Due to the modular nature of solar cells, building solar panels is real simple. The cells are very easy to handle because they are relatively small. They easily fit in your hands.

Due to the modular nature of solar cells, building solar panels is real simple. The cells are very easy to handle because they are relatively small. They easily fit in your hands.

You place the cells in their panel and connect them in series. After each panel is completed check it for connectivity and then connect the panels to one another. Once the panels are connected and in place, connect the entire array to your battery pack and then to your inverter before connecting to your house. As you know, solar (photovoltaic) cells convert solar energy into electricity. That should be plainly obvious, but this basic understanding is necessary when you dive into how electricity is actually made with these cells.

The light photons land on the semiconductor (the silicon) and when they do, they bump an electron loose. They type of silicon and what it is mixed with varies depending on what polarity you want the silicon to have. Phosphorous creates a negatively charged semiconductor, boron, a positively charged one. By varying positive and negative layers, the photons can more easily knock an electron loose. This newly freed electron is looking for a new home.

Each cell is designed to push their electrons in the same direction as all the other cells. With enough cells and enough solar energy striking them, you have an electrical current you can work with.

Building solar panels is a breeze if you are meticulous about getting each cell in series with the next, checking your solder and any other connections. There’s a channel down each cell where the electrons travel into a tab. The tabs are how one cell is connected to another. Once they are all connected, they are covered with a layer of glass or laminate to protect the cells from the elements. Any residual moisture is eliminated and the panels are placed into position and hooked up together.

Now, from here on out, all you need to do is hook up your new solar panel system to your house’s electrical system. Personally, my recommendation is to hire a professional to do this for two reasons. One: I’m not about to be wandering around on the roof where a loose shingle could send me flying. Two: I sleep so much better knowing that a certified electrician was responsible for the hook up. If anything goes wrong, it’s not my fault. Making any improvements to your home’s electrical system requires in most places, that you stayup to code and that will keep your insurance policy in effect.

Basements can be a great addition to your home. They make good function rooms and they can also be an excellent place to entertain guests and to relax on weekends. You can also have your children use a corner as play pen.

The basement can be utilized in many ways. Practically everything you can think of. But before all the convenience and comfort take place, it is important to put some investment on your basement wall system. By investment, it means both time and money. For a safe and secure basement wall system, here are some items that you must know and ensure that they are present in a well prepared and constructed basement:

1. External insulation. You will have to do a lot of digging. This is because the soil outside of your house is in contact to your basement walls. You will have to insulate that surface area where your wall is exposed to the damp earth. Check some utilities that may be placed in these areas. These are things like gas, hydro, telephone, water, sewage. Ensure their safety and maintenance. Insulating your exterior walls prevents heat loss in your basement. All this can be overwhelming if you?re new to this business. You may want to consult or hire a professional to do the external basement wall system for you. Or you may do it yourself. But just be sure to do it right. Otherwise, you might have to dig extensively again in the future.

2. Internal Insulation. The interior walls must also be insulated. This is because air leaks in very easily. The air is cold outside. You have no control over that. But you do have control over preventing air flow to come in. A good basement wall system for internal insulation does that. Usually, this type uses fiberglass materials layered in your walls. Some would use foam type or plastic fixtures. This may cost you but it?s a worthy investment. You don?t want to have a cold basement room, do you?

3. Basement Waterproofing – Your basement must be free from molds, mildew, bacteria and all other fungus that will start spreading in. It will make your basement smell bad. And since these molds are not easy to find, you?ll have a hard time figuring out where it?s coming from. When this happens, nobody wants to stay in your basement anymore. So this is basement waterproofing comes in. Some basements have rubber plastic adhesive solutions layered in joints and walls to prevent moisture to set in. You may also want to check other basement wall system options in waterproofing. Just make sure they?re safe.

Sure you have a very beautiful basement. It?s very cozy, well lit and probably the most livable place in your home. But if you a poor basement wall system, chances are you won?t be enjoying its benefits for long.

Your basement is fully functional and efficient if it is free from moisture and damp. These things cause bad smell, cold room temperature, and not to mention damage to your foundation walls. If this happens, you will spend some time each year doing repairs. Not only that, it will cost you and eventually spend more.

If you just bought a new house with a spacious basement and don't know what to do about it, then what you need is a good plan.

If you just bought a new house with a spacious basement and don’t know what to do about it, then what you need is a good plan.

Visualize – Like all plans, first thing that comes to mind is to imagine of what you want your basement to look like. However you want to use it, it pays to have a picture of finished basement in your head. Why is it so? Here are some of the reasons why it is important to do this. - This is a project you can’t afford to fail. It is essentially part of the process. Yes it is. Any architect or interior designer will tell you that before any project will start, a design plan should be made. There must be an advanced perspective of what you want your basement to look like. If you succeed in this phase of having a picture of finished basement in your mind, then you are on the right track.

- It helps to have drawings and illustrations. As mentioned in the first pointer, you must have a clear picture ahead of your basement?s look. In doing this, it is required that you translate your idea into a perceptive sketch. You may draw it yourself or have someone with a talent in drawing do it for you. It doesn?t have to be in scale for now. The picture of finished basement should just be comprehensive and clear enough for those who might also help you build it.

- Pay attention to details. In drawing a plan of your basement, consider it highly. Accuracy in details is always an advantage and is necessary at this point. This is where you draw the plan to scale. This is where you start expanding your idea. The detailed perspective sketch of your basement can better lead you into drawing other details for the plan and will help you later on. Details in your picture of finished basement should be able to guide you in construction. And this is true especially when something falters in the process, you could always refer to the detailed plan.

- Know what to expect. The picture of finished basement that you drew guides you to your expectations. Starting from the sketch, you move your ideas backwards. Then you build it back up from there. It may be assumed that you do not know much about carpentry, construction materials, tools, and the steps in building your basement. But if your perspective is clear, it should be able to get your details planned out too. Of course, you cannot do this unless you have finalized and outlined your concept. Even if you just did it first in your head.

Your basement holds endless possibilities. You can use it as your home office. You can use it as a mini gym. Some households convert their basement into a mini bar for friends to party and hangout. And you probably had this figured out from the first day you bought the house.

Whatever you hope to use for it, it is up to you. Just always remember to take into serious consider to have a clear picture of finished basement before you decide what to do with it.

by Torrie Cantor

It’s easy to decide whether you want to remodel your kitchen or not. Picking kitchen contractors for the project, though, can be quite difficult.

What to do first?

Decide on the scope of your kitchen remodeling project. This must be based according to your taste while keeping your budget in mind. You should ask yourself questions such as whether or not you would like to replace the kitchen faucet and lights, or perhaps add a kitchen. Or perhaps you want to have a complete or total kitchen makeover such as changing the entire floor plan of your kitchen or just basically starting from scratch.

Make a List

Once you’ve made your decisions, get a pen and paper. It’s time to make a list! Write down all your wants and needs for your brand new kitchen. To help you with his, try going into home improvement stores and browsing kitchen remodeling magazines. Make sure you take note of the costs of each – appliance, furniture, materials, and fixtures. By making this kind of list, it will help you stay with the budget you have in mind.

It’s also important for you to protect your home while the renovation is going on. Here are a few suggestions:

- Buy carpet squares or lengths of carpet and put them on the path where the contractors usually will walk through. This is to prevent any permanent damages that may happen to your floor.

- Cover your furniture with blankets or thin sheets of plastic so by the end of the remodeling, you won’t have to clean as much. This also protects your furniture from scratches, spills or other damages.

- Store breakable items in a safe place.

Meeting with your Contractor for the First Time

If you’re a quiet person, this is the time to speak up. Sit down and talk with your contractor. You have to be able to verbalize what your expectations. Speaking is the key to have a good relationship with your contractor.

During your conversation, be sure to cover the following:

- Time of Work – it’s important that you clarify this with your contractor. Tell him what specific time of the day should the project be worked on. Keep in mind though that the smaller the time you give them, the longer it takes for them to finish their work. If you have an upcoming party and it just so happens to be in the middle of the renovation, inform the contractors ahead and in what condition would you like your kitchen to be in before the occasion.

- The Food and Meals – Since you are only paying them for their services, you are not obliged to provide the workers with food.

- The Restroom – Inform the contractors which restrooms they can and cannot use.

- Where to Park – Find a place for the contractors to park. The nearer it is to your house, the better. Communication is the most important key. Miscommunication may lead to disagreements and unnecessary costs. Always communicate with your kitchen contractor, and the progress of the kitchen remodeling project will go smoothly.
